Midnights photoshoot | October 21, 2022

See by Chloé ‘Ruffled Stripe Gauze Top’ - $450.00 (sold out)

If you know me you know that I have not only been waiting a long time for a TS70s aesthetic to come to life, but that I love seeing Taylor in Chloé.

All that to say that the Midnights photoshoot is one of the best things to ever happen. The rich textures, the distinctly retro silhouettes, the Stevie Nicksification of her hair contrasted with her glam eye makeup, the commitment on behalf of whoever decorated this set to really create that dingy 70s motel mood. Combined it’s all just really incredible and I’m so grateful.

Vintage Dress - not available for purchase
Âme Jewelry ‘Totem Circle Stud Earrings’ - $3,500.00
De Beers 'Forevermark Five Diamond Station Ring’ - price available upon request
Bondeye Jewelry 'Wave White Diamond Ring’ - $950.00

I love this mix of modern and retro plus the very fun interplay of shapes and geometry here between each of her jewelry pieces (a circle, diamonds, and an organic wave) against the more quilted print of her (sadly) vintage dress.

Djula ‘You And Me Ring’ - €430.00
Cadar 'Light Baguette Ring’ - $3,900.00
Cadar 'Tu Psyche Ring’ - $5,900.00

Taylor’s team is particularly adept, in my opinion, at picking out standout jewelry to complement a look. My favourite here is that cocktail ring by Cadar which, again, mimics the shape of the sequins throughout the gown as well as the circular medallions in the chains around her shoulders.

Melis Goral ‘Citrine Diamond Earrings’ - $4,650.00

Taylor’s earrings appear to be based off a citrine ring design by Melis Goral jewelry from their 'Reflections’ collection. I love the way the colour and shape of these earrings mirror those of the chains on her gown. Great tie-in.

As an aside? Her hair and makeup are stunning here.

Louis Vuitton custom gown

For Taylor’s appearance at TIFF, I was hedging bets as to whether she would show up in the business babe-adjacent attire that she has favoured when attending promotional events where she wants to underscore her title as director on the project … or leaning into the glam showgirl aesthetic that tentatively appears to be the defining factor of the upcoming Midnights era.

In making her appearance at TIFF in this very glam sequinned custom LV gown: I think we have our answer.

I love how the gold paillettes are very reminiscent and recognizable within Taylor’s style repertoire. The girl has yet to meet a sequin she doesn’t love. But the very elegant way the skirt falls (perfectly hemmed btw to just kiss the floor - so well done) combined with the draping chain details makes this feel like a classed up extension of her MTV VMA appearance that had very similar shoulder details. It’s also a very nice slideshow moment where we now have a Midnights-esque appearance in: Silver, a colour, and now gold.

The RED hair (those bangs! the sleek blowout!) gave me temporary whiplash wondering if this was an appearance from 2012 I had somehow missed also feels like a very prescient tie-in to the fact that the project she is promoting is for that very same re-recorded album.

All in all - well done. She looks great, she looks classy, she looks glam and it somehow hits the mark for both of the albums she’s promoting (RED TV and Midnights). And that is not easy to do!

Once again killing the jewelry game. I love how these echo the sparkles of her romper and create shape/movement with their curved fit.

Nicole Rose Jewelry 'Diamond Mix Cut Coil Ring’ - $5,195.00
Melissa Kaye 'Aria Belle Ring’ - $4,950.00

Though hidden underneath her coat, Taylor was wearing a few new white gold rings for her after-party appearance. A nice complement to the star motif on her romper.

Moschino romper - not available for purchase (pictured similar)

Tentatively from the two appearances we’ve seen, it’s really fascinating the juxtaposition of this level of glamour and glitz with what appears to be one of her most introspective and potentially dark works to date.

While Taylor has explored vintage styles in previous era’s (RED), this feels like a more luxe showgirl-esque version of that. And when placed in the context of an album that explores the intrusive thoughts or the secret highs that come at midnight, the style choice is made all the more fascinating.

Especially when we consider the high shine allure of ‘showgirl’ performance and production - it’s a life and a culture defined by a shiny, beautifully coiffed exterior that is often laminated over a seedier underbelly. Which (again, from what we know) seems to align with the darker narratives I suspect will be present on Midnights.

Which is to say, in short, I’m obsessed.

Alexander McQueen ‘Butterfly Glitter Ankle Strap Platform Sandal’ - $1,090.00

This is such a fun true 'party’ in 'after party’ look that nods to the night’s earlier showgirl-esque red carpet outfit and also to her newly announced Midnights album with the star motif.

The shrugged jacket continues that touch of over-the-top 'glam’ that seems to be a tentative theme to this era’s fashion. As do these platform sparkly sandals.

Pat McGrath 'Sublime Perfection Concealer in Light 7’- $34.00
Pat McGrath 'Sublime Perfection Setting Powder in Light 1 and Light Medium 2’ - $39.00
Pat McGrath 'Blurring Under-Eye Powder in Light’ - $32.00

I’m appreciative and grateful for Pat McGrath’s beauty work on Taylor last night - and for posting all. the. deets! It’s so fun to be able to have insight into the exact details of Taylor’s beauty lewks.

As I’ve had a moment to process and go over close up photos, my thoughts on beauty styling are the jewels are awesome choices (especially those earrings) and I generally love the makeup and glow.

But I do wish that in order to commit to the retro vibes and provide a cleaner finish around her forehead that her bangs were styled in finger curls and perhaps paring down the crystal appliques to a single one (or 2-3) at each corner of her eyes to further emphasize her signature cat eyeliner. That or instead of black liner, a fun silver glitter liner.
