the commentary

Round two of season two of National Sportsball Observation. Last year, Taylor developed a reliable style playbook when it came to her game day fashion. While I’ve identified some Taylor’s long-standing pillars for her style as a whole, dressing for this specific situation needed its own set of rules. The circumstances created constants (a football stadium) and constraints (Chiefs colours) that her style needed to shift to in order to function. To me, her game day style pillars are women-owned/locally-owned brands, sentimental accessories, and vintage.

Here, we see that third (and, potentially, the first) pillar continue. While they couldn’t confirm it with certainty, Westside Storey - the KC-local vintage store where Taylor has previously picked up Chiefs garb from - did have this piece in their store as of last week. I reached out to Westside Storey and the owner Chris Harrington told me, “We love to see her supporting small businesses already, but the fact that she’s bought from us previously and potentially again? It was surreal the first time, and it’s still just as shocking now!”. I’ve said previously that I’ve loved Taylor relying on vintage pieces as it gives her a non-commercialized and fashionably sustainable way of showing up to these games in her supporting role. Taylor intrinsically understands ‘The Swift Effect’ and the purchasing power of what she wears. Taking this as an opportunity to point towards smaller businesses and continue her long-standing wearing of vintage clothing feels v on brand for her.

Speaking of fashion pillars, one of those aforementioned ones for her style as a whole is repetition. You may recognize these Giuseppe Zanotti boots as Taylor wore them to the Chiefs opening season game against the Ravens last week but in red. A very “if I like it I’ll just get it in a different colour” moment.

A few more style pillars on display for Taylor: repetition and the high/low. You might remember that she wore the Vitaly chain earlier this year to a Chiefs charity dinner and the Louis Vuitton bag from an outing in New York City last week.
