The Eras Tour | Lover | v1
the commentary
Welcome to The Eras Tour, everyone.
Here, we begin a comeback tour where we seemingly last left off: With not only the first album under Taylor’s new record contract that she owns but that also had its live iteration cancelled. The candy coated colours of this Versace bodysuit are an on-brand callout to the Lover aesthetic while also being very signature to the iridescent embellishments that Versace is known for. This is what you call perfect brand alignment - what a great designer to bring this vision to life.
But more than that, the opening of the tour sees dancers encircle Taylor in seashell-shaped props. The effect evokes the birth of Venus - goddess of love. This makes sense on multiple levels not only for its literal connection to the album Lover and Taylor wanting to be known for the things that she loves, not the things that she hates (as per “Daylight”). But also the Birth of Venus painting depicts the goddess emerging from the sea, fully formed. No one moulded Venus, she came into existence herself. I can imagine Taylor feeling a kinship with that thought as someone whose life is a direct result of her life, her words, her work. And opening this particular tour with that kind of imagery feels all the more appropriate and powerful.
In the world of tour costuming, Taylor is no stranger to an on stage quick change. Most of the time, she does it as if by a magic trick. One second she’s in one ensemble, the next in a blur of moving bodies or sleight of hand she’s in a different one. The Eras Tour employs this trick, but it also isn’t afraid to lean in to the simple change of outerwear.
For “The Man”, Taylor dons a completely custom bedazzled blazer which not only made my predictions very happy but serves as a seamless way to completely change an outfit and also visually tie in to the theme of the song being performed. The set transforms and the dancers don stuffy corporate suits and Taylor changes accordingly - albeit in a more glam fashion.
For a second tour in a row, Christian Louboutin will be the exclusive footwear provider for The Eras Tour. They previously custom made all of Taylor’s shoes on the reputation Tour so it’s no surprise that the relationship continues here.
These particular boots appear to be based on the ‘Eleanor Botta’ silhouette, rendered in an allover crystal strass.
