Super Bowl LVIII
the commentary
Leading up to the Super Bowl, many TSSers have asked for a predictions post of what I thought she might wear. Truthfully? I didn’t think one was necessary. Not because the occasion isn’t a huge and momentous one - but because Taylor’s Super Bowl style has followed such a reliable formula that a predictions post felt like oversetting expectations. We love a ‘work’ uniform created in mind for a setting. And in Taylor’s ‘rookie season’ of sportsball spectatorship, she’s developed a great one.
With that, my predictions heading into this day was something black, red, with a touch of gold and a ton of sentimental value to it. Which is what we see on display here.
The combination of a black base + WEAR by EA jacket + black bustier top to me immediately harkened back to her third game - Broncos vs Chiefs on October 12 (check stories for a micro Fashion History with TSS lesson). But within this outfit itself, there are other great throwbacks to other moments in Taylor’s evolution as game day observer.
The bustier references the Balenciaga one worn to the aforementioned game, but that also bears similarities to the Versace one worn during the #killahardlaunch from October 14 when Taylor and Travis first appeared on the streets of NYC following Taylor’s cameo at SNL that night.
The embllishements harken back to the blue distressed shorts she wore to her second game on October 1 which were by the same brand (as were the butterfly jeans she wore in that first post-split candid back in April) and the colour to the dark wash Ksubi shorts she wore to her very first game on September 24.
Ending her season in this manner, with callbacks to both her style and relationship journey, feels intrinsically Taylor who has leveraged her style over the course of this season to center smaller designers (especially female-owned ones like #WearbyEA or ones local to KC), in Chiefs-oriented colours, formulated into casual but chic game day outfits that befit someone happy to be an enthusiastic spectator.
There’s a few different callbacks on display here with this bustier alone which when paired with a ton of gold accessories, and a red jacket remind me very much of Taylor’s outfit from her third game (October 12, Broncos vs Chiefs). Taylor also of course wore a Versace corset top like this one the night she and Travis walked hand in hand in NYC following Taylor’s cameo appearance at SNL to introduce Ice Spice.
But more importantly is the diplomatic dressing on display here. This happens to be Taylor’s first time wearing Dion Lee who is an Australian fashion designer. To me, this reads as a nice callout to the fact that Taylor has Aussie fans on the brain as she’ll of course be heading there next on the Eras Tour (first Melbourne, then Sydney).
This is the special Super Bowl edition of the designers’ football clutch (which is available in a few colourways). Taylor requisitioned her custom Judith Leiber football clutch to have Travis’ number added to it by the brand - but if that wasn’t a bespoke option would it surprise me at all if she took matters into her own hands via a hot glue gun? No.
A part of me likes to think that this was chosen as a game day appropriate nod to the purse that the KC Chiefs owners, the Hunts, gifted Taylor for her birthday last year - which was by this same designer, but a microphone. But it turns out the purse was indeed a gift - just from Shaq!
Having seemingly learned from the AFC Championship game when Taylor stepped onto the field for the first time to celebrate the win, she’s swapped her stiletto heels for a thicker, slanted block heel that appears to be these ‘Eleonor’ style ones. And a custom ’87’ on the side. Naturally.
Once again, Taylor’s jewelry choices are doing a lot of talking. This is the first time as far as I’m aware that Taylor is wearing L.A.-based ‘The Last Line’ - but how appropriate is it to wear a (Chiefs) red heart earring that obviously has a romantic undertone from a brand that has a name one could easily parallel to this being the final game of the football season.
To coordinate with the “’60” on her Wear by EA jacket (a reference to the founding year of the Chiefs - you’ll spot it intermittently across Chiefs merch and it’s differentiated from the player number here by the ‘ ahead of ’6’), Taylor went personal with an ’87’ necklace.
Taylor has worn quite a few timeless diamond tennis pieces this year, her Eras Tour movie premiere set immediately comes to my mind. Rounding out her jewelry with some more ‘loving him was (Chiefs) red’ pieces by Shay.
This isn’t the first time Taylor has worn Retrouvai. Another L.A.-based jewelry brand. The last time being the “I Bet You Think About Me” music video - directed of course by Blake Lively who just so happens to be there with Taylor to take in tonights game. ‘Magna’ of course meaning ‘great’ in Latin - which feels like a bejeweled way to manifest a Chiefs win.
